HENRY FETTER was another carpenter-contractor of early times.
Born in Germany he came to this country when six years old and to New
Brighton in 1837. While learning his trade he erected from lumber, planed
by hand, the residence in which he lived and died, at the northeast corner
of Fifth Avenue and Eleventh Street in 1839-41. A newspaper advertisement
appearing in March, 1855, informs us that T. O. Waddle, H. Fetter, and C.
R. Waddle, as Waddle, Fetter & Co., have leased the lower story of the
sash factory building of G. M. Stewart for planing mill purposes. The mill
was on the Canal opposite the Merrick House. In the same year he built the
Kenwood School for Boys, now part of the Beaver Valley Hospital. In 1857,
he constructed the Huron House and about the same time a large cotton mill
in Old Brighton, as well as many private dwellings. He was a
Presbyterian, a member of the Pennsylvania militia in the War between the
States, and a public spirited citizen. His children were William H. and
Mrs. J. W. Ebaugh, deceased, Louis, Rebecca Wilson and Minetta Walsh. He
died in December, 1912, at the age of ninety-four years.
