Clarence D. Baker    

Clarence D. Baker, a Butler attorney, has been a member of the Pennsylvania bar for fourteen years. He was born in Butler, September 3, 1887, the son of T. M. and Nancy E. (Painter) Baker.

T. M. Baker was born in Beaver Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, April 24, 1862, the son of George K. and Martha Baker.
T. M. Baker received his primary education in the public schools and West Sunbury Academy, and Grove City College. In 1885 he began reading law with John M. Russell and was admitted to practice in September, 1888, and became a member of the firm of Coulter & Baker. He is now the cashier of the Merchants’ Bank of Butler. He married, February 24, 1887, Miss Nannie E. Painter, a daughter of Simon P. Painter, who resided in Clay Township, Butler County. To Mr. and Mrs. Baker two children were born: Stella G., married Levi S. Hoon, Jr., clerk at the Merchants’ Bank; she is a graduate of Beaver College; and (2) Clarence D., the subject of this sketch.

Clarence D. Baker was educated in the public schools of Butler, graduated from high school in 1906, and in 1910 received his A. B. degree from Allegheny College. Mr. Baker also attended the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Pittsburgh. In 1912 he was admitted to the Butler County bar, at which time he opened his own office in the I. 0. 0. F. Building. In 1921 he moved to his present location in the McClung Building.

While in college Mr. Baker played on the varsity football team for two years, the baseball varsity team, basketball varsity team, and was captain of this team for two years. Mr. Baker is coach of the Allegheny College basketball team, which position he has held the past four seasons.

In 1914 Mr. Baker was married to Miss Ruth E. Bartholomew, a daughter of M. B. and Lena Bartholomew. Mr. Bartholomew, now deceased, was an Erie Railroad conductor for many years, being the oldest employe in point of service at the time of his death. His widow resides in Meadville, Pennsylvania.

Mr. Baker has served on the City Council of Butler for one term,. when Butler was a borough, and also as borough treasurer. He is a Republican, a member of the Methodist Church, Butler County Bar Association, Butler Country Club, B. P. O. Elks No. 170, Delta Tan Delta, of which he has been president for two years, and is recordkeeper of the Maccabees. Mr. Baker, both professionally and personally, enjoys the esteem and respect of the community.
