Dr. A. M. Padilla, physician and surgeon,
engaged in the successful practice of his profession at Butler, is one of
the progressive and influential young men of the county. He was born at
San Juan, Porto Rico, January 27, 1890, the son of Julio and Mary Padilla,
both natives of Porto Rico.
Julio Padilla received his early education in Porto
Rico, later graduating with the degree of Doctor of Laws from the
University of Madrid, Spain. He practiced his profession for a time, later
devoting all his time to his large sugar cane and coffee plantation in
Porto Rico. He died in 1912 and his wife died in 1892. They are both
buried at San Juan. They were the parents of six children, all of whom are
deceased, except Dr. A. M., the subject of this sketch.
A. M. Padilla was educated in private schools in San
Juan, and in 1900 came to the United States. He attended St. Johns
Military Academy, Culver Military Institute, and graduated from
Mercersburg Academy, Pennsylvania, in 1908. He then attended the
University
of Pennsylvania, from which he received his A. B. degree in 1911, and
received his degree as Doctor of Medicine from Jefferson Medical College,
Philadelphia, in 1914. His interneship was spent at the Jefferson Hospital
and Frankford Hospital, Philadelphia. He opened an office for the practice
of his profession at Kalamazoo, Michigan, in 1916, where he remained one
year.
During the World War Doctor Padilla enlisted in 1917
in the U. S. Army Medical Corps as a first lieutenant. He served in France
until November, 1917. Doctor Padilla was attached to a Scotch Highlander
regiment and was wounded at Pascandal Ridge. He was returned to the United
States in February, 1918, and was discharged as a first lieutenant. He
then went to Thomas, West Virginia, as physician for the Davis Coal & Coke
Company. In 1920 he came to Butler and became associated with Dr. J. E.
Atwell.
In 1911 Doctor Padilla was married to Miss Emily
Fowler, a daughter of George and Kate Fowler, of Philadelphia. Mr. Fowler,
deceased, was a marine engineer. To Doctor and Mrs. Padilla two children
have been born: Mercedes, born in February, 1917; and Julio, born in
February, 1919.
Doctor Padilla is a member of the Butler County
Medical Society, the Pennsylvania State Medical Society and the American
